What songs were hot when you were in high school?
This series of notebooks represents the code used to generate the analysis for “What songs were hot when you were in high school?” on Datafantic.com.
- 01 - Data Collection.ipynb: Collects top songs for each year between 1958-2022 from Wikipedia. Song features are queried from the Spotify API. Scraped data is in songs.csv.
- 02 - EDA on Song Data.ipynb: Exploratory data analysis on the resulting scraped data.
- 03 - Create Playlists.ipynb: Playlists on Spotify are programmatically created.
- 04 - Find my Playlist.py: Users can look up their preferred playlist using a Streamlit app. To see the actual app see the article here.
Inspiration for this project
When using music streaming services I often find that the recommendations simply aren’t very good. Perhaps it’s because the music I listen to often doesn’t follow a specific theme or consistent genre. Instead, I often listen to music tied to a specific place and time in my life. Music for me unlocks the memories and feelings from that period in my life.
Unfortunately music streaming servies don’t seem well equipped to do this. After listening to certain types of music for a while you get pigeon-holed into a valley of recommendations. As a result people still resort to the humble playlist.
My hope is to create a playlist that speaks to your own time and place using a bit of data and some APIs.
